Designation of Origin
The archaeological dating of a grape seed found on the site of O Castelo (Valencia do Sil, Vilamartín) demonstrating the cultivation of vines for winemaking.
Appearance of three lagares (stone structures for making wine in the vineyard itself) in the municipality of Larouco..
First written document on wine emerges in the region.
Building starts on the shrine of Nosa Señora das Ermidas in O Bolo, wine being an indispensable part of the shrine's economy, with more than 200 plots of land dedicated to growing grapes.
Records exist from the period between the late 18th and early 19th century of the construction of the first covas (traditional wine cellars) using materials such as clay, granite or slate, used for making and storing the wine. Nowadays there are more than 1,000 covas in Valdeorras.
Phylloxera invades the vineyards, destroying thousands of hectares. Valdeorras-born José Núñez discovers the formula to exterminate the plague.
The Valdeorras Designation of Origin is recognised by Ministerial Decree. It was created with the aim of working on the recovery of native varieties, focusing on quality and control and encouraging promotion.
Recovery of the Godello variety begins within the framework of the Proyecto Revival. All the Godello grapes growing in the world today have their origin in the protected territory of Valdeorras
The Valdeorras vineyards lend the region a unique character thanks to the quality of their wines, which spark interest both in Spain and worldwide.
