ROMAN EMPIRE

Appearance of three lagares (stone structures for making wine in the vineyard itself) in the municipality of Larouco..

940

First written document on wine emerges in the region.

1624

Building starts on the shrine of Nosa Señora das Ermidas in O Bolo, wine being an indispensable part of the shrine's economy, with more than 200 plots of land dedicated to growing grapes.

1800

Records exist from the period between the late 18th and early 19th century of the construction of the first covas (traditional wine cellars) using materials such as clay, granite or slate, used for making and storing the wine. Nowadays there are more than 1,000 covas in Valdeorras.

1882

Phylloxera invades the vineyards, destroying thousands of hectares. Valdeorras-born José Núñez discovers the formula to exterminate the plague.

1945

The Valdeorras Designation of Origin is recognised by Ministerial Decree. It was created with the aim of working on the recovery of native varieties, focusing on quality and control and encouraging promotion.

1975

Recovery of the Godello variety begins within the framework of the Proyecto Revival. All the Godello grapes growing in the world today have their origin in the protected territory of Valdeorras

CURRENT EVENTS

The Valdeorras vineyards lend the region a unique character thanks to the quality of their wines, which spark interest both in Spain and worldwide.

Functions

The role of the Valdeorras Designation of Origin Regulatory Board is to protect and safeguard everyone working in the value chain of the local winemaking sector, boosting the culture surrounding this product, strengthening its promotion and positioning in different markets.
